Chandra Observation of SNR G 54 . 1 + 0 . 3 — a Close Cousin of the Crab Nebula

چکیده
We present a Chandra ACIS observation of SNR G54.1+0.3. This supernova remnant is resolved into several distinct X-ray emitting components: a central bright point-like source (CXOU J193030.13+185214.1), a surrounding ring, bipo-lar elongations, plus low surface brightness diffuse emission. The spectra of these components are all well described by power-law models; the spectral index steep-ens with increasing distance from the point-like source. We find no evidence for any thermal plasma emission that would correspond to shocked interstel-lar medium or ejecta. The observed morphological and spectral characteristics suggest that G54.1+0.3 is the closest " cousin " of the Crab Nebula — a pulsar wind nebula driven by a combination of equatorial and polar outflows from the putative pulsar represented by the point-like X-ray source.

Observations of the Vela pulsar region with the Chandra X-ray observatory have revealed the fine structure of its synchrotron pulsar-wind nebula (PWN), which showed an overall similarity with the Crab PWN. However, contrary to the Crab, no firm detection of the Vela PWN in optical has been reported yet. To search for the optical counterpart of the X-ray PWN, we analyzed deep optical observation...
متن کاملA Spatially Resolved Plerionic X-Ray Nebula around PSR B0540-69.
We present a high-resolution Chandra X-ray observation of PSR B0540-69, the Crab-like 50 ms pulsar in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We use phase-resolved imaging to decompose the extended X-ray emission, as expected of a synchrotron nebula, from the pointlike emission of the pulsar. The image of the pulsed X-ray emission shows a well-defined point-spread function of the observation, while the res...
متن کاملYear-scale morphological variation of the X-ray Crab Nebula
We present year-scale morphological variations of the Crab Nebula revealed by Chandra X-ray observatory. Observations have been performed about every 1.7 years over the 3 years from its launch. The variations are clearly recognized at two sites: the torus and the southern jet. The torus, which had been steadily expanding until 1.7 years ago, now appears to have shrunk in the latest observation....
متن کاملA Half - Megasecond Chandra Observation of the Oxygen - Rich Supernova Remnant G 292 . 0 + 1 . 8
We report on our initial analysis of a deep 510 ks observation of the Galactic oxygenrich supernova remnant (SNR) G292.0+1.8 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Our new Chandra ACIS-I observation has a larger field of view and an order of magnitude deeper exposure than the previous Chandra observation, which allows us to cover the entire SNR and to detect new metal-rich ejecta features. We find...
متن کاملX-rays from Supernova Remnants
A summary of X-ray observations of supernova remnants is presented including the explosion fragment A of the Vela SNR, Tycho, N132D, RX J08524622, the Crab Nebula and the ’bulls eye’, and SN 1987A, high-lighting the progress made with Chandra and XMMNewton and touching upon the questions which arise from these observations and which might inspire future research.
